Government Launches New Map of NKRI

The Coordinating Ministry for the Ministry of Marine Affairs has launched a map of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). The new map focuses more on Indonesia's maritime border with other countries. 

Deputy of Maritime Sovereignty Coordination Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno, said, there are some new things that cause the NKRI map must be updated. 

'Firstly, there is a valid sea territorial border agreement between the eastern and western side of Indonesia-Singapore, and the Indonesia and Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone Agreement (ZEE) agreement that has been mutually agreed upon and ratified so that in the not too distant future Will apply, 'Havas said as quoted in the Setkab.go.id page, Saturday (15/07/2017). 

Secondly, the light of Havas, the arbitration decision of the Philippines and China which gives the jurisprudence of international law that a small island or small coral in the middle of the sea that can not support human life has no ZEE rights 200 nautical miles and the continental shelf. So there are some small islands belonging to neighboring Indonesia which is only given territorial border 12 nautical miles. 

'Next, we update the ocean column to the north of natuna,' he said. In addition, according to Havas, the government wants to reinforce the claim in the Malacca Strait by simplifying borderline claims to facilitate law enforcement. 

Then, in the area near the Singapore border there is a clear boundary line. 'With that position, the map needs to be updated so that the security and law enforcement officers of the Navy, Customs, KPLP will be easy to patrol there because it is clear, 'He added. 

In this case, Havas claims the relevant ministries and agencies have been holding internal meetings for six times since 2016. 

Meanwhile, related to the unfinished segment of maritime boundaries with neighboring countries, the deputy, who is also an international marine law expert, The RI government will soon solve it.

'We are ready to resolve it through negotiations in accordance with UNCLOS 1982,' he stressed. Therefore, the Government of Indonesia continues to conduct routine patrols, in order to strengthen the existence of the State in the area that Indonesia claims.
